The building was opened for classes in January 1922. The first graduation in May of that year had two graduating students: Mary Clyde Andrews and Kate Walker. Each week during our 100th anniversary year, we’ll be featuring some of our alumni. We’re starting this week with our first two graduates. Thank you to Connie Mashburn, MHS Class of 1959 and the city of Alpharetta Historian, for providing this week’s information.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Donna Shaw Murphy - Class of 1978 - Some of her favorite memories as a student were “cruising” through town, cul-de-sac parties on the weekends, church youth group on Sunday nights, going “steady” with her boyfriend, and weekend dates to the movies. She remembers having a Farrah Fawcett hairdo and wearing bell bottoms, peace signs, tie-dye, and glitter nail polish. During Donna’s time at MHS, the student population came from a very large geographic area--Milton being the only high school North of Roswell and the Chattahoochee River. But she thought of the student body as family. She made life-long friends, many of whom went to school together from kindergarten through graduation. They grew up together and watched out for each other. Summing up her time at Milton, Donna said “It was a great experience! Some of the best years of my life. Milton prepared me well for college and my future. I graduated as a solid, confident young woman ready to make my mark on the world both in my career and personal life.”</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Josh Porter - Class of 1998 - Josh’s favorite classes at Milton were AP U.S. Government with Mrs. Jackie Angel because he enjoyed talking about politics and Outdoor Education because he liked making campfires and learning about fishing with Coach Glenn Stephens. He said “Coach Stephens is the reason I’m a teacher and coach today! He made learning and playing football fun!” He also loved getting the Red Envelopes at graduation and Steak Night Wednesdays with the offensive line football players. He and some of his football buddies still get together every so often for Steak Night. When asked about his time at Milton, Josh said “I loved being a student at Milton High School. It was so much fun playing football and wrestling in a community that supported us!”</image:title>

After earning her B.S.Ed. in Math Education from the University of Georgia, she taught at Centennial High School before transferring to Milton. She has been at MHS for four years and is currently teaching Math and ESOL. While a student at Milton, Erin played volleyball all four years for her coach—Deb Schaefer. Ms. Schaefer is now her department chair. During Erin’s senior year, the volleyball team, known that year as the Cinderella team, made it to the final four in the state tournament. Erin was also on the gymnastics team, coached by Natalie Stucky. Now, Erin is coaching the MHS gymnastics team alongside Coach Stucky!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Erin Michael Ely - Class of 2008 - Erin’s favorite classes were always her math classes, especially the challenge of AP Calculus. Her favorite teacher was Mrs. Alyce Price, her AP Calculus teacher. Erin said Mrs. Price played a huge role in her becoming a Math teacher. She also enjoyed Mrs. Sara Hake’s English class, saying it helped prepare her for college and the real world and also Coach Van Keys’ Rec Games class. “We hopped on a bus and went bowling twice a week!” Erin lived with three girls from Milton her junior and senior years at college and still hangs out with eight of her Milton friends. She is so grateful she made such amazing friends at Milton! She loved the dedicated staff and strong Milton community. Erin is proud to be a Milton Eagle and loves the history and traditions. Erin is married and expecting her first baby in a matter of days.</image:title>
